Quartz dust: How Schüle increases employee safety with Dustlight

Background

Schüle GmbH is a family-run company with around 100 employees that specializes in the production of complex cast parts. With almost 70 years of experience and state-of-the-art production technology, the company serves well-known customers such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and ZF. Schüle's expertise lies in particular in the production of thin-walled and core-intensive castings, supplemented by X-ray testing and heat treatment to ensure high quality standards.

The challenge

A significant challenge for Schüle GmbH was the exposure of employees to fine quartz dust, which is considered silicogenic dust and is particularly harmful to health. This fine quartz dust is mainly produced when working with sand. At Schüle, wooden models are used to produce sand molds that are used as external contours for cast parts. The risk of increased dust exposure for employees was particularly high during these activities and during cleaning work before shift changes. A comprehensive analysis and identification of the dust-generating activities was therefore necessary in order to take suitable protective measures and determine the necessary medical examinations for affected employees.

Solution

The introduction of Dustlight was the solution for Schüle GmbH. Dustlight records the dust exposure of employees and helps to determine which people are exposed to particularly high levels and therefore require more comprehensive protective measures, as well as appropriate medical examinations.

The device was used in production over a period of four months to collect and analyze relevant data. The results of this evaluation were presented to employees as part of the annual safety briefing.

Results

The use of Dustlight aroused great interest and curiosity among the employees. Many of them actively integrated the measurements into their daily work routine, which significantly increased their awareness of workplace hazards. The precise data enabled a more targeted risk analysis and helped to more clearly determine the need for medical examinations.

Summary

By implementing the Dustlight, the Schüle metal foundry was not only able to identify the dangers of fine dust more accurately, but also significantly improve safety and employee awareness.

The close cooperation and feedback from the workforce helped to make everyday working life safer and implement the necessary protective measures in a targeted manner.
