The optical measuring principle of Dustlight is based on laser scattering. A photodiode detects light incident on it due to the interaction of particles and light, and Dustlight converts this signal into particle size and particle count in real time. However, an assumption of particle density is required to calculate the particle concentration.
As the exact composition of the dust is often unknown, Dustlight uses an algorithm based on sum parameters to precisely calculate the particle concentration. This algorithm, developed at the Institute for Hazardous Substances Research, combines gravimetric and optical measurements from various fields of application. Using particle distribution, temperature and humidity, Dustlight provides reliable results without knowing the exact dust composition - a proven method for workplace measurement.
While the intelligent Dustlight algorithm is more than sufficient for most applications, this approach will naturally always have a small discrepancy with gravimetric measurements. For this reason, we offer application or substance-specific adaptations of the algorithm for customers where only certain dust compositions occur or who want to measure a specific substance, which we can make available via the app.
Material-specific configuration
For customers who want to use Dustlight to measure very specific substances, e.g., in the processing and filling of raw materials such as silica or powders in the food industry, we offer substance-specific customization. To create this special configuration, our Dustlight measurement engineers, in collaboration with the Institute for Hazardous Substances Research, carry out gravimetric and optical measurements of the desired environment and use these measurements to create a material-specific adaptation of our algorithm.

Application-specific configuration
For areas of application in which only certain mixtures of substances occur, we have made special application-specific configurations. We currently offer application-specific configurations for the following cases, but we are continuously working on further configurations.
- Woodworking: This application-specific configuration is adapted to environments where mainly wood dust from softwoods is present.
- Welding: This application-specific configuration is adapted to environments in which welding fumes and metal dust are mainly present. The algorithm was created using various welding processes (e.g. TIG, electrode welding) and a wide variety of materials and metal dust to be welded.
